There is nothing worse than having a headshot that you hate…. well… actually, maybe for some of us, it’s actually having the headshot taken in the first place. I know – I’m the worst when I’m on the other side of the camera. Suddenly I completely forgot how my body works and what smile is my real smile.
BUT, let’s not all panic just yet. Because these 4 great tips are key to making your headshot photoshoot less painful but also making sure you end up with amazing headshots you actually like.
NUMBER ONE: Pick a photographer than makes you feel comfortable, maybe even give them a quick call on the phone before booking so you can get a feel for their energy and whether they can put you at ease. If they can, amazing, that’s going to help so much when you’re in front of them for your headshots.
NUMBER TWO:
Choose the right clothing for your headshots. Think about the industry you’re in and choose clothes that align with that. An example is dressing like a business professional when you’re in a corporate setting or a little more casual (but still polished) when you work in a more creative field.
When it comes to your clothes, don’t forget to think about the colour, fit and style as well. Make sure to choose colours that compliment your skin tone as well as well fitting clothes that make you feel confident.
NUMBER THREE:
Your posture matters and is a powerful way to make an image more powerful, more approachable, more inviting, more relaxed – etc. A great photographer (like myself!) will direct you on what to do with your hands, your feet, your body. Making sure you’re portrayed in a way that fits with how you’ve indicated you want to be photographed and with your body type and clothing choice. A super quick tip though is to angled your body just slightly away from the camera so that you aren’t square on to the camera. This has a slimming effect.
Another trick is the push your chin slight forward and down, this helps to create a really flattering jaw line (which I know for myself, I need that!).
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
Go and practice your smile – a warm, genuine smile that is felt in the eyes will ensure those looking at your headshot will feel connected to you. You’ll come across as approachable and interested instead of bored or standoffish. Think of something that makes you really happy and relaxed and chat to the photographer just like they’re your friend (or hair dresser!) – I promise you, it’ll make you feel 100% better which will be conveyed into your images.
