This fashion-inspired beach shoot brought together natural light, movement and multiple styled looks to create a collection of editorial and campaign-style imagery.

We photographed several different looks across the evening, using the changing light, wind, water and beach environment to create images that move between relaxed lifestyle photography and a more polished fashion editorial feel.

Creating different looks in one location

We photographed around three different looks throughout the shoot, but changing the clothing was only part of creating variety.

I worked across different areas of the beach, changing compositions, crops, posing and movement as we went. We created everything from closer portraits and clothing details through to full-length photographs and wider images where the beach became a bigger part of the frame.

The neutral denim and vest combination gave us a softer, relaxed look, while the darker styling created something moodier and more editorial.

Everything was photographed within the same beach environment, but each set still has its own feel.

Working with movement, wind and water

One of my favourite things about photographing fashion-inspired work outside the studio is working with all the things I can’t completely control.

Hair moves. Clothing moves. The light changes. Waves arrive exactly when they feel like it, which is exactly why I enjoy this type of work.

Throughout this shoot I photographed plenty of movement. We incorporated walking, turning, playing with clothing and moving through the water.

Some frames are sharp and deliberate, while others use intentional motion blur to bring more energy into the photographs. Those less-perfectly-still moments can completely change the feel of a series.

Creating more than hero portraits

When I’m photographing something with a commercial or campaign feel, I’m looking for more than individual hero portraits.

I’ll shoot wide, tight, vertical and horizontal, including details of the clothing and wider frames with plenty of space around the model.

Some photographs might have the model looking directly at the camera. Others are more about movement, details or the environment itself.

That variety gives the finished gallery far more depth than simply creating twenty versions of essentially the same portrait.

It also means there are photographs that can work in completely different ways. Larger feature images can sit alongside supporting photographs, tighter details and wider environmental frames.

Fashion and lifestyle photography on location

This style of photography works beautifully for fashion, clothing and lifestyle brands.

Location, styling, movement and natural light can all become part of the visual story.

A beach gives us plenty to work with without needing elaborate sets. The landscape can be quiet and minimal in one frame. Add wind, water and movement, and the next photograph can feel completely different.

And sometimes that means getting in the ocean.
